the grand canyon

Driving from Sedona, you don't get a glimpse of the Grand Canyon until you walk directly next to it from the South Rim visitor's centre. I was so excited, yet had the urge to avoid looking until the last moment. I made Jed lead me down the trail with my eyes closed. When we finally stopped and I opened them, my stomach flipped. Not because of the heights or the danger of falling, but from the pure unfathomable vastness; the layers of colour and light and time, the history and geology of the formation of the earth laid out through this enormous canyon.
