This competition in the historic center of Nuremberg, Germany, called for a design for paving, lighting, and seating on the main market square. The city was interested in preserving the historic paving stones and character as much as possible while maintaining the functions of daily market.
The main market square--the hauptmarkt--comes to life during the Nuremberg Christkindlmarkt (the Christmas market) and so the historic paving was reimagined to follow the lines of the market stalls. A uniform new paving surrounding the site set a reduced background to bring attention to the more ornate historic elements of the site. New bronze furnishings were proposed to recall the intricate materiality of the "Beautiful Fountain" made of wrought bronze in the 1600's
