"Vancouver Special"
“Vancouver Special” by Zero Waste artist, Leah Price, is a collection of pictures fashioned with couture sewing techniques from cast-off, vintage polyester double-knit and other brazen mid-century and Flower Power textiles, depicting beloved Vancouver sights, and memories of her childhood.
Inspired by the constraints of using discard as her sole raw material, Leah Price embraces the challenge to make “something” out of “nothing”. Couture sewing techniques, freehand machine embroidery and reverse appliqué transform unwanted, ugly vintage textile into beautiful – and often humorous – colourful and texture-rich pictures, sparking a dialogue around sustainability, connection and sense of place. Expect to experience delight, nostalgia, intrigue and a new appreciation for the potential inherent in the unwanted.
